PETER ALAN JOSEPH, ESQ. Introduce

Welcome to the platform for Nearby Lawyers, your local guide to legal professionals. This listing provides information regarding PETER ALAN JOSEPH, ESQ., whose office is located at 177 Waverly Pl #5F, New York, NY 10014, USA. It is critical to note that the information presented here is derived from direct client feedback available online, which raises significant concerns regarding the services offered.

Based on the detailed accounts from individuals who have engaged with PETER ALAN JOSEPH, ESQ., the environment of the practice appears unconventional and potentially problematic. One review describes the office as situated within the lawyer's "rather old and unkempt apartment," located on the fifth floor of a building accessible only via "very steep stairs." This description suggests a non-traditional office setting that may not provide the professionalism, accessibility, and comfort typically expected in a legal service environment. For individuals with mobility issues, the physical location alone could present a significant barrier to accessing services.

The primary area of legal service for which feedback is available is immigration law, specifically concerning an asylum case. However, the experiences shared by a client paint a troubling picture of the services provided. According to this detailed review, the issues encountered include:

  • Questionable Billing Practices: The client recounts being charged for an initial consultation that was advertised as free. This fee was then allegedly added to the retainer amount, increasing the initial cost of representation. Furthermore, the hourly rate charged for the consultation was disputed by the client.
  • Lack of Diligence and Progress: The reviewer states that despite paying a retainer fee, there was a significant lack of progress on their case over a period of five months. This raises serious concerns about the lawyer's commitment to actively working on behalf of their clients in a timely manner.
  • Poor Communication and Unprofessional Conduct: The client describes frequent, unconfirmed changes to appointment times via text message, leading to confusion and logistical challenges. The most alarming account details arriving for a scheduled appointment only to find Mr. Joseph allegedly asleep, resulting in the appointment being rescheduled. This behavior is highly unprofessional and reflects poorly on the lawyer's commitment to their clients' time and needs.
  • Concerns Regarding Legal Documentation: The asylum application prepared by Mr. Joseph was described as being written in his own "illegible hand writing," which could potentially compromise the clarity and effectiveness of the legal document. The subsequent return of documents was also described as disorganized and ultimately provided incomplete and inaccurate information.
  • Failure to Meet Critical Deadlines and Potential Harm to the Case: The most serious allegation is that due to the lawyer's inaction and delays, the crucial one-year deadline for filing the asylum application was missed. This negligence reportedly put the asylum seeker at significant risk of having their application rejected, highlighting a severe dereliction of professional duty.
  • Allegations of Misrepresentation and Negligence: The client explicitly accuses PETER ALAN JOSEPH, ESQ. of misrepresenting his experience, inflating billing hours for "research," and creating a situation of significant legal jeopardy due to his negligence. The reviewer also mentions the need to hire another lawyer to attempt to rectify the damage caused by the alleged mishandling of the case.
  • Current Accessibility Issues: The reviewer also notes that the phone lines for the office are currently down, further hindering communication and raising additional concerns about the lawyer's ability to be contacted and to provide ongoing support to clients.

Based solely on the information available, there are no discernible positive features or promotional information to highlight regarding the services of PETER ALAN JOSEPH, ESQ. The overwhelming sentiment from the direct client feedback is one of dissatisfaction, frustration, and serious concern regarding the lawyer's professionalism, competence, and ethical conduct.

For local users in New York seeking legal representation, particularly in the complex and time-sensitive field of immigration law, it is strongly recommended to exercise extreme caution and to thoroughly investigate alternative legal counsel. The detailed negative experience shared by a former client serves as a significant warning. When choosing a lawyer, it is crucial to look for professionals with a proven track record of success, positive client testimonials from multiple sources, a well-established and accessible office environment, clear and reliable communication practices, and a demonstrated commitment to ethical and diligent representation.

The legal landscape in New York City offers a wide array of experienced and reputable attorneys specializing in various fields of law, including immigration. Potential clients are advised to utilize resources such as online lawyer directories, bar association referrals, and independent review platforms to identify legal professionals with strong reputations and documented positive client experiences. It is always prudent to schedule initial consultations with multiple attorneys to discuss your specific legal needs and to assess their qualifications, experience, and approach to your case before making a hiring decision.

In conclusion, the available information regarding PETER ALAN JOSEPH, ESQ. primarily consists of a deeply concerning account from a former client alleging significant professional misconduct, negligence, and potential harm to their legal matter. Given these serious allegations and the lack of any positive or corroborating information, local users in New York are strongly advised to proceed with extreme caution and to seek legal representation from other, more favorably reviewed attorneys in the area. The reported issues with the office environment and communication further underscore the need for potential clients to look elsewhere for their legal needs.

I went to Peter Joseph office early January to file for asylum fora young man who was seeking asylum. Mr Josephs office is in his rather old and unkempt apartment which is up 5 flights of very steep stairs. I gave him$100 in cash for the consultation which was advertised as free which he later claimed took 31/2hours and forwhich he charged $175 an hour. We also gave him a retainer of $2500 to which he added the $100 for the "Free Consultation" We only saw him about 3 times, once when he filled out the supposed Asylum application which he later claimed was written in his own illegible hand writing. He kept changing the times of our apointments in texts without any confirmation that we actually recieved them. The last apointment we made around January 6 which was just before the year to file for asylum was up, we went to his office at 4pm.He buzzed us in and when we opened the door he was in bed sleeping. He claimed we didnt have an apointment. And we had to leave because he was tired and we should come back the next day at 11 am. The next day he messaged that 2 pm would be better for him. I told him that we could not continue using his service and that he could keep $600 for his time and return $2000, which he refused. After haggling he returned $1000 and said he would give us any documents of ours he had at 2pm but then texted again that we could pick them up at a cleaners across for his apartment on Waverley Place. The document he returned was only a handwritten letter I had written detailing why the young man was late in filing for asylum which was on Mr Joseph's recommendation and was not even correct. In summation, Mr Joseph who is currently undergoing chemotherapy, fraudulently represented himself as an experienced immigration lawyer, padded the hours he spent doing "research" etc. and created a situation where not only are we over the time limit for filing for asylum, and he has put the young man in question in danger of being rejected for his asylum application, but we have now to pay another lawyer to undo his negligence. I have written proof of all of this and am now seeking the return of $1600 of his retainer. My recommendation is to stay away from Peter A Joseph Esquire. As per my recent experience, he is a total fraud and a very poor lawyer with serious memory issues.
