The primary area of legal service offered by The Law Offices of Steven M. Bishop, as highlighted by available information, is bankruptcy law. Specifically, they focus on assisting individuals and families in filing for bankruptcy under Chapters 7 and 13 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. This specialization suggests a dedicated expertise in helping clients navigate the complexities of bankruptcy proceedings to achieve financial relief. Chapter 7 bankruptcy involves the discharge of certain debts, while Chapter 13 involves a repayment plan over a period of three to five years. The Law Offices of Steven M. Bishop appear to provide guidance and representation throughout both processes.
A key feature of a law practice focused on bankruptcy is the in-depth understanding of federal bankruptcy laws and procedures. Steven M. Bishop, as the principal of the firm, likely possesses the necessary expertise to advise clients on eligibility for different bankruptcy chapters, the implications of filing, the protection of exempt assets, the discharge of debts, and the development of feasible repayment plans under Chapter 13. This specialized knowledge is crucial for individuals facing overwhelming debt and seeking a fresh financial start or a structured way to repay their obligations.
While the primary focus appears to be bankruptcy law, it is not uncommon for bankruptcy law offices to also handle related financial matters or offer assistance with alternatives to bankruptcy, such as debt negotiation. However, based on the information available, their core service revolves around guiding clients through Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy proceedings.
Navigating bankruptcy can be a stressful and confusing experience. Therefore, a key feature of a reputable bankruptcy law office is often a client-centered approach. This involves providing clear explanations of the legal process, thoroughly understanding the client's individual financial situation, and offering compassionate and supportive guidance throughout the proceedings. It is likely that The Law Offices of Steven M. Bishop prioritize these aspects in their client interactions, aiming to alleviate the stress and uncertainty associated with financial distress.
When considering a bankruptcy attorney, it is essential to understand the scope of their services. For both Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy, these services typically include an initial consultation to assess the client's financial situation and determine the most appropriate course of action. If bankruptcy is the recommended path, the attorney will assist with the preparation and filing of the necessary legal documents, represent the client at meetings with creditors (such as the 341 meeting), and guide them through the discharge process in Chapter 7 or the confirmation and execution of the repayment plan in Chapter 13. The Law Offices of Steven M. Bishop likely provide these comprehensive services to their clients.
Given the sensitive nature of bankruptcy proceedings, another important feature of a law office in this field is maintaining strict client confidentiality and adhering to the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct. Clients entrust their financial well-being to their attorney, and a trustworthy and ethical approach is paramount to building and maintaining client confidence.
Regarding promotional information, it is common for bankruptcy law offices to offer a free initial consultation to individuals considering filing for bankruptcy. This allows potential clients to discuss their financial situation with an experienced attorney, understand their options under the bankruptcy code, and learn about the firm's services and fees without any initial financial obligation. It would be beneficial to contact The Law Offices of Steven M. Bishop directly to inquire if they offer such a complimentary consultation.
To further understand The Law Offices of Steven M. Bishop and the experience of their clients, it can be helpful to seek out online reviews or testimonials. I am writing this review to warn others about my terrible experience with Steven Bishop. If you are looking for a competent, ethical, and trustworthy attorney, look elsewhere. I contacted him for my RFO hearing because my ex had repeatedly violated court orders, had already been sanctioned once, and had been warned three times by the judge to comply. During our initial phone consultation, I explained that my goal was to request an evidentiary hearing at my upcoming RFO hearing. He advised me to file an ex parte motion instead of waiting for the RFO. When I asked for the cost of filing the ex parte and representing me in the RFO hearing if the judge denied our request, he quoted me $1,500. However, when I arrived at his office, he suddenly increased the price to a $2,500 retainer—just for the ex parte hearing. With limited time before the hearing, I reluctantly paid the $2,500, expecting competent representation. Before the hearing, I sent him key points for my case, but based on what happened next, I highly doubt he ever reviewed them. The hearing was remote, and I was sitting right next to him. Instead of making a strong argument, he blatantly misrepresented my position to the judge. He falsely claimed that I believed the RFO hearing was already an evidentiary hearing and even suggested this might be due to a “language barrier.” This was completely false. I had been crystal clear that I was the one who requested the continuance. His misrepresentation hurt my credibility in front of the judge, who was visibly frustrated and denied our request while continuing the RFO hearing. After the hearing, despite my disappointment, I remained professional. However, he then told me that to represent me in the RFO hearing, I needed to pay another $2,500. Given his lack of preparation, poor advocacy, and dishonesty in court, I refused. At that point, I asked how much of my $2,500 retainer he had actually used. He checked with his assistant, and together they confirmed that he had used $1,900, meaning I had a remaining balance of $600. He assured me I would receive a refund. The next morning, when I called his office, his assistant again confirmed that I had a $600 balance and said it would be refunded the following week. However, when I followed up, Bishop suddenly changed his story, claiming there was no refund because he had used the entire $2,500. When I reminded him that both he and his assistant confirmed my balance, he sent me a bogus invoice with inflated charges. In reality, he must have spent no more than two hours on my case—yet he charged me the full $2,500. How is this acceptable?

Mr. Bishop and his associate Mr. Suskauer are highly professional and have exceptional knowledge and expertise in family law. Importantly, they gave me a realistic appraisal of my case at the very start, setting up expectations based on their experience and familiarity with the court and the judges assigned to me. They listened to my opinion and how I wanted to proceed. They take costs into consideration. They are quick to respond to questions and concerns, and their office staff is friendly and helpful. I give them the highest recommendation.
I was literally frozen with fear heading into my divorce. Mr. Bishop's compassion, combined with his gently-delivered hard truths, were invaluable to helping me move forward. He and his staff made the initial filing an extremely simple process. Mr. Bishop also worked diligently, respectfully and efficiently during our settlement meeting. What could have become a very ugly litigation situation, was instead settled with a two hour meeting. I could not be more grateful to Mr. Bishop. Divorce is the WORST, but Mr. Bishop and his staff are the BEST!
Mr. Bishop and Ben worked tenaciously to ensure that my demands were properly articulated and met. The open line of communication and professional candor based on their experience is unmatched and greatly appreciated. The entire process was painless on my part and one of the most affordable in San Diego.
