Massey, Stotser & Nichols, P.C. Introduce
Welcome to the profile of Massey, Stotser & Nichols, P.C., a law firm located at 1780 Gadsden Hwy in Birmingham, Alabama, 35235, USA. As a listed entity within the Nearby Lawyers platform category, Massey, Stotser & Nichols, P.C. serves the legal needs of the local community in Birmingham and the surrounding areas. The available customer feedback provides insights into client experiences with specific attorneys and the firm's intake process, which potential clients may find valuable when considering their legal options.
One detailed review focuses on the experience with Attorney Chesley Payne. The client recounts engaging the firm for business-related legal services, including the formation and subsequent dissolution of a business with partners. During the dissolution process, Mr. Payne reportedly suggested holding funds in an escrow account to cover final business fees and tax obligations, to which all parties agreed. However, the review alleges that Mr. Payne later released funds to one member without the approval or notification of the other parties, and that the amount disbursed exceeded that member's rightful share. The client asserts that Mr. Payne lacked the legal basis and authority to take this action. Furthermore, the review expresses strong dissatisfaction with Mr. Payne's alleged unprofessional conduct in forwarding email conversations between the client and himself to the party who received the funds in error. While acknowledging that the firm may have other competent attorneys, the reviewer strongly advises potential clients to "stay far away from Mr. Payne" based on this negative experience.
Another review details a negative interaction with the firm's intake process. A prospective client called to inquire about a tenant-landlord situation. According to the review, the intake personnel immediately quoted an hourly rate of $300-$400 for speaking with an attorney, seemingly preempting any discussion of the case details or the client's needs. The reviewer expressed surprise at this upfront disclosure without any prior inquiry about pricing, clarifying that they were not seeking pro-bono services given that they had contacted a law firm. The intake person then reportedly suggested that the cost might be too high and advised the caller to contact their other lawyer. The reviewer expressed disappointment with this interaction, especially considering a referral to the firm.
Given these two recent reviews, potential clients have access to specific feedback regarding experiences with at least one attorney, Mr. Payne, and the firm's initial client interaction. The review concerning Mr. Payne raises significant concerns about his handling of client funds, communication, and professional conduct in a business dissolution case. The review about the intake process suggests a potentially abrupt or unhelpful initial contact experience, focusing heavily on cost without exploring the client's legal issue.

I am writing this review concerning Attorney Chesley Payne. We used Massey, Stotser, & Nichols to start a business and dissolve a business, with partners. When the business dissolved, Mr. Payne suggested to all parties that money remain in an escrow account to pay final business fees, our business return, etc. All parties agreed. Months later, a tax bill was owed and we discovered that Mr. Payne released funds to one member, without anyone else's approval and without notifying the other parties. He also overpaid to this member the amount of funds that would have been their share. Mr. Payne had no right and no legal basis to do this. In addition, he VERY unprofessionally forwarded emailed conversations that I had with him, to the party that received funds, in error. The firm may indeed have good attorneys, but stay far away from Mr. Payne.
I called to speak with someone in regards to my tenant-landlord situation. The intake lady, listened and then said…well I’m gonna tell you upfront it’s $300-$400/hr to speak with an attorney. Okay? And? Did I inquire about the price? Obviously I wasn’t looking for pro-bono work or I wouldn’t have called THIS law firm. She said it might be a little too costly and that I should call my other lawyer back. Wowwwwwww. Thanks. And to think someone referred this place to me.
Rick Stotser and his team have become an integral part of our business. Guiding us through negotiations and helping to create a standard for our contracts. Rick and his team are more than a law firm and as I understand it fantastic litigators. They have also aligned us with strategic partnerships, and will share ideas that help us in making the best decisions for the structure of our business... Martin Michael Producer Big Film Factory
Cindy picked up halfway during my divorce after my original attorney was appointed to be a Judge. She got up to speed very quickly. She was honest with me about my best options, and she worked hard until the end to make sure I had the best outcome for my situation. Thank you, Cindy!
I used Massey, Stotser & Nichols for a real estate closing. It was painless, profession and (crazy, i know) FUN. The attorneys are thoughtful, good listeners and very warm. I never felt like my small piece of business wasn't important to them. You can be very confident that if you work with an attorney from MS&N, you will be important to them as well. Highly recommend.
