  • Receptionist has ZERO compassion for people. Told me I was arguing and I was just looking for help and sympathy as I need help filing an appeal for my SSI. I have less than 2 weeks before my payments are cut in half for no reason (just received the notice today). Just wanted to talk to a lawyer for 10 minutes. I will not be able to afford to live.
  • After my appeal was denied this "attorney" said nothing at my hearing and then claimed that I did not respond to a letter he sent me. Which I did call him twice on and he said he would help me starting a new claim. when I went to follow up on this he claimed that we never talked and he didn't know what I was talking about and that my case was closed by him.this wasn't very helpful as I have been trying for 6 years and am now homeless and haven't eaten in 3 days.
  • Most shotty attorney (Ed Olson) I've ever NOT worked with. He dropped the ball on my daughter's appeal causing me to have to start a 2 year process over and losing all back pay. He never called to inform me that he dropped the, but continued to lie and say he sent an appeal when he knowingly had not. I have reported him to the state bar. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS "attorney"
  • I spoke with Marlene, she was more than helpful and very much appreciated for her insight.
  • Very kind, responsive and all of Mr. Olson's advice was spot-on. He knows what he is doing.

About Disability Attorneys of Minnesota

Navigating the complex world of Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits can be one of the most challenging experiences for individuals in Minnesota who are unable to work due to a disability. The process, from initial application to potential appeals, is often fraught with bureaucratic hurdles, confusing paperwork, and a high rate of initial denials. When your ability to live and support yourself is on the line, having compassionate, knowledgeable, and persistent legal guidance is not just helpful—it’s often essential. This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Disability Attorneys of Minnesota, a legal practice located conveniently in Minneapolis, dedicated to assisting Minnesotans through the Social Security Disability claims process. If you're in Minnesota and struggling to secure the benefits you deserve, understanding what this firm offers can be a crucial step towards finding the support and peace of mind you need.

Disability Attorneys of Minnesota is a legal practice focused on assisting individuals with their Social Security Disability (SSD) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) claims. The firm is dedicated to helping disabled individuals navigate the often-complicated application and appeals process to secure the benefits they desperately need. For those facing denials or struggling with the bureaucracy of the Social Security Administration, having an attorney who understands the system and can advocate effectively is paramount. While the provided reviews highlight some challenging individual experiences with communication, it's important to recognize that disability law can be an emotionally taxing field for all parties involved, and the appeals process itself is inherently difficult and lengthy. Many law firms specializing in SSD often operate on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if your claim is approved, which aligns with the Social Security Administration’s strict fee rules. This structure aims to make legal help accessible to those who might otherwise be unable to afford it. For Minnesotans seeking to secure their disability benefits, understanding the specialized nature of this legal area and the complexities of the system is key, and Disability Attorneys of Minnesota is positioned to offer assistance in this critical area.

Disability Attorneys of Minnesota focuses primarily on assisting individuals with various aspects of Social Security Disability benefits. This specialized focus means they are well-versed in the specific regulations and procedures of the Social Security Administration (SSA). Their services typically include:

  • Initial Social Security Disability Applications: Guiding clients through the initial application process for both Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), ensuring all necessary forms are completed accurately and submitted on time.
  • Request for Reconsideration: If an initial application is denied (which happens in over 70% of cases), assisting clients in filing a Request for Reconsideration, which is the first level of appeal. This involves submitting new medical evidence and addressing the reasons for the initial denial.
  • Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Hearings: Representing clients at hearings before an Administrative Law Judge. This is a critical stage where an attorney can present evidence, question vocational experts and medical experts, and argue the client's case directly to a judge. Many claims are approved at this stage.
  • Appeals Council Review: If an ALJ denies the claim, assisting clients in requesting a review by the Social Security Appeals Council, which reviews the ALJ's decision for errors of law or procedure.
  • Federal Court Appeals: As a final step in the appeals process, representing clients in federal district court if the Appeals Council denies their claim or declines to review it. This is a highly complex stage that requires specialized legal expertise.
  • Gathering Medical Evidence: Working with clients and their healthcare providers to obtain comprehensive medical records, doctor's opinions, and other necessary documentation to support the disability claim.
  • Understanding SSA Regulations: Explaining the complex rules and regulations of the Social Security Administration, including definitions of disability, work credits, and income limits for SSI.
  • Client Consultation and Case Evaluation: Providing initial consultations to assess the viability of a disability claim and outline the steps involved.

While direct testimonials highlight some challenges, the general features and highlights of a firm specializing in Social Security Disability, and what clients should look for, include:

  • Specialized Focus on Disability Law: A firm like Disability Attorneys of Minnesota, by its very name, indicates a dedicated focus on Social Security Disability law (both SSDI and SSI). This specialization means attorneys are deeply familiar with the nuances of SSA regulations, medical requirements, and the complex appeals process.
  • Experience with All Appeal Levels: Competent disability attorneys guide clients through all four levels of the appeal process: Reconsideration, Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Hearing, Appeals Council Review, and Federal Court Review. This comprehensive support is vital given the high initial denial rates.
  • Understanding of Medical Evidence: A key aspect of disability claims is the submission of thorough and compelling medical evidence. A specialized firm knows what specific medical documentation the SSA requires and how to present it effectively to demonstrate disability.
  • Contingency Fee Structure: Most reputable Social Security Disability attorneys operate on a contingency fee basis. This means clients typically do not pay attorney fees unless and until they win their case. Fees are usually capped at 25% of any past-due benefits (back pay) or a maximum federal limit, ensuring affordability. This makes legal representation accessible to individuals who are already facing financial hardship due to their disability.
  • Guidance Through Bureaucracy: The Social Security system is notoriously bureaucratic and difficult to navigate alone. An attorney can handle the paperwork, deadlines, and communications with the SSA, significantly reducing stress for clients.
  • Preparation for Hearings: The ALJ hearing is a critical juncture where many claims are approved. A skilled attorney prepares clients for questioning, presents a compelling case, and cross-examines vocational and medical experts.

In the realm of Social Security Disability law, specific "promotions or special offers" are generally standardized due to federal regulations governing attorney fees. For Disability Attorneys of Minnesota, as with most reputable firms in this field, the primary "offer" is the contingency fee arrangement. This means:

  • No Upfront Fees: You typically do not pay any attorney fees out-of-pocket when you hire them.
  • Payment Only Upon Winning: The firm only gets paid if they successfully secure benefits for you.
  • Fee Cap: Attorney fees are generally capped by federal law at 25% of your past-due benefits (back pay), up to a maximum amount (currently $7,200 for most cases, though it can be higher in federal court appeals). This ensures that a significant portion of your benefits goes directly to you.

This fee structure is a significant benefit to Minnesotans seeking disability benefits, as it removes the financial barrier to accessing legal representation during a time of great financial strain. It aligns the attorney's interests directly with yours: they are motivated to win your case to receive payment. While specific, individual "promotions" beyond this standard contingency fee are rare, the firm likely offers a free initial consultation to discuss your case and explain how they can help you navigate the disability claims process without any financial commitment upfront. It is always advisable to clarify the fee agreement during this initial consultation.
