When my husband filed for divorce, I was surprised and overwhelmed by the process, but never more than upon learning how, although our son M is severely disabled, he’s an adult, and therefore not eligible to be part of any separation agreement. In other words, there are gaps in our social safety net and folks like M fall through them regularly, with grim results.
